The first book I’ve read in awhile that had me fully consumed. Finished this one quick as it had me on the edge of my seat.

This took me so long to finish! It’s a really heavy topic and even though I am very adamantly pro-choice, and I found this novel a little difficult to read. I think that this book is well written but I don’t know if I can say that I enjoyed reading it to be completely honest.

I thought this was a great book! I love Jodi Picoult and her storytelling. The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because I didn't like reading the story backwards. I appreciate that is was probably pretty difficult to write it that way but I struggled with reading it that way.

Jodi Picoult is a great writer. The only thing that made me dislike this book was that she decided to make the story begin at its end. I didn't realize the chapters weren't in the right order- that they were reversed- so I kept going.. "Wait.. isn't she gone?".. "Didn't he find that out in the last chapter?" until it clicked. It was so awfully, incredibly annoying to have something happen, go to the next chapter and realize it hadn't happened yet.

This author always makes you think

This time she brings her even-handed storytelling to the abortion debate. Regardless which side you think you support, you will at least recognize and understand some of the associated and underlying issues by the time you 're finished. An armed gunman attacks an abortion clinic in the deep south, forcing everyone to confront their personal beliefs. Jodie's characters are never all good or all bad, and while there are some who are easier to root for than others, they each have well thought out opinions and moral stances, and the ability to evoke empathy for their views. Her books are excellent for book clubs, since they include an author interview and discussion questions. This is a timely look at a controversial topic.

DID NOT FINISH: 30%

Was just slow and boring and couldn't get into it

I struggled deciding on my rating for this one and actually writing a review. From a storytelling standpoint, I thought it was really well done. The hostage crisis and interweaving of all the characters was captivating and I really liked the format of going hour by hour in reverse. My hangup I’m deciding how I really felt about the book comes down to the subject matter itself. I thought Picoult did a decent job of arguing both sides of the abortion debate through her characters (specifically through Janine, who I thought gave solid arguments for the pro-life movement) but it was pretty clear which side the author stands on and that seeped into her writing through the “anti” stereotypes portrayed. Overall I decided to base my review more on the storyline and writing style and not just her personal stance on an issue I care deeply about. Three and a half stars.
