Read this because I LOVED Just Last Night… I guess I should have seen the absolutely evil manipulation of McFarlane’s cutsie cover and description coming … This book wasn’t bad by any means. It’s just that I didn’t know it was going to be about emotional abuse in relationships. Because the cover and description were giving cute-roommates-to-lovers romcom vibes. Harriet actually had such real trauma. Like not in a way that “it’s the worst thing I’ve ever heard” but in a way that’s like - yea I feel like this could happen to someone I know, or to me. She’s a good person I think, and so is Cal, but I think their romance was kind of a stretch. I really would have liked them as friends. And I think the pacing of the last act was a little off. Just with the scheming and the wedding and the romance etc. it’s a well done book of you know what you’re signing up for
still my favorite!!!!!!!!!!

this just might be her best book yet….. and i do not say that lightly

TW past abusive relationships
This wasn't what I had expected from this book. I had expected a cute rom-com based on the cover, the title and the description. Now having finished this, it was more about Harriet and her (past) relationships and growing from them than a cutesy rom-com. I mean it has the house sharing and a handful of cute scenes between Harriet and Cal but it's more a small dash than the full meal.
I saw this as an exploration of different moments (and reasons, I guess) as to why ppl might cancel a wedding presented in three different stages of a wedding timeline, from propsal to saying no right at the altar. Which was interesting I guess.
Could have had more romance.

What really killed this book for me is that it was marketed as a romance. This is not a romance novel; it’s more of a general fiction/coming of age.
I didn’t guess enjoy the growth that we see in the main character. I wasn’t super onboard with Harriet at first, but after learning about her background, I learned to appreciate her actions and understand the meaning behind them.
I love that this book talked a lot about emotional abuse and manipulation and the dangers of social media. The conclusion to the main conflict was unexpected, but done in a satisfying way. It’s something I wish I had the balls to do if I ever found myself in a situation that warranted it.
As far as the romance goes, I either wanted more of it or for it to be completely manipulated. While I enjoyed Harriet and Cal and agreed that they should end up together, the author didn’t give us enough of them for it to warrant that ending. There was no reason for them to be saying “I love you” and all that by the end. It felt like insta-love even though it was at the end of the book because we didn’t get to see them fall in love. The book was about Harriet’s trauma from the emotional abuse of her ex-boyfriend; it wasn’t about love, so the declarations at the end just fell flat, like badly.
