The FMC doesn't have enough of a backbone to stand up to her horrible ex and her ex's toxic family. Whatever else is in the story is not worth the emotional torture of that.

This is more chick lit than romance, imo, but very high-quality chick lit. I enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed this book but if it was given to me with no cover, no blurb and no expectations it would have made more sense to me. The typical animated character cover and blurb made it out to be a standard or at least focused romance. However, I think it's fair to say the romance is actually quite a small subplot. This isn't a bad thing because I agree the other themes in this book are so important to pursue and the discussions of female friendship amidst abusive relationships make the book extremely interesting. But it isn't a romance book. So this is probably more a me thing and it not meeting my expectations based on the description of the book given. It didn't deter my enjoyment in any way, I loved reading this book. The writing is very witty and easy to read whilst exploring potentially dark themes in a clever and digestible way. The characters are very carefully explored and explained without anyone being left behind. And the plot is crafted extremely cleverly, using each moment to contribute to the different themes explored throughout. So this is a convoluted way of saying, this book is really great but the romance is not a central part. Not a bad thing, just a thing to expect when you pick it up.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars

This book is very very heavy. It's mostly about dealing with a past abusive relationship so please make sure you are in the right headspace to read it if you decide to pick it up.

The romance between Harriet and Cal is so sweet! I wish there was a bit more of it, but Mhairi McFarlane is a (woman's) fiction author, not a romance author so I knew that going in I would probably want a little bit more.

I thought i would read this and probably give it 3 stars at most then unhaul it into another little free library but I genuinely quite enjoyed this book. Sorry that was a long way of saying I didn't expect to love this book as much as I did. If I had a nickle for everytime I'd read a book that I got at a little free library, just to get it off my physical tbr not expecting to like it that much and ended up loving it then, I'd have 2 nickles which isn't alot but it's weird that it happened twice.
