The first time I read a McFarland book I was shocked at how serious and unrom-com-esque it was. This time I knew what I was in for and it made a massively enjoyable read. Her books are not about the swoon worthy romance, they are about the characters struggles and growth. I can't relate to any of what the main character went through, but I still found that her incredibly relatable. It might be strange to say, but this book reminded me to get out of my head and fix my life.
I never could understand the cutesy cover choices of McFarlane’s books or even the summaries. She masters addressing tough topics such as emotional abuse, infidelity, and gaslighting while balancing with humour, witty banter, and strong friendships. Sure, there’s a romance, but it’s treated as a backstory, providing relief from the main themes. I love her focus on friendship and women supporting women. The main plot line (there are many!) resonated with me to an eerie extent and I love how she treated it with such care. I don’t know how this book would sit with someone who hasn’t experienced these themes, but as one who has, I found it cathartic and am so happy these issues are being tackled in contemporary literature.
*Removing a star because: c’mon Harriet, have we learned anything about making assumptions? The protagonist experiences such growth throughout the book, but this pattern kept detracting from it.
