Bridget Jones The Edge of Reason, oh god where to even begin with this one?? I’ve incredibly generously given it two stars, given the horrific racism and religious discrimination embedding throughout the novel. Its only redeeming quality is some of the 2000’s humour and Bridget’s aloof and crazy behaviour (still relatable) so I’ve begrudgingly given it 2.
As Bridget Jones's Diary is based on Pride and Prejudice, Fielding bases the second novel on another Austen book, Persuasion. I think this book would have been best as a standalone novel, the second just drags out the plot and it feels unnecessary and over done, the Colin First interview for example? Bridget's obsessive character was overplayed, it was so embarrassing to read. Also her not knowing she was supposed to register to vote? Just unbelievable and ridiculous.
Here is two of the worst quotes that literally stopped me in my tracks:
Bridget describes her self help books as a religion, arguing that they promote forgiveness and help guide her. Mark questions what religious group she compares these books to, “not Muslim I hope. I don’t think you find much forgiveness in a faith that lops peoples hands off for stealing bread buns” (pg 76) wtf, how revolting? It is so unnecessary and this reveals a lot about Helen Fielding.
At work Bridget suggests that Tony Blair should enforce "a code of Dating Practice for Singletons". She evidences this by asking her team to "just think of the number of working hours lost through distraction, sulks, discussions to interpret situations and waiting for the phone to ring... it must easily be on par with black pain" (pg 196) who in there right mind would believe that being single is 'on par' with the centuries of racism and oppression that black people have suffered?! How has this comparison been allowed? When editors and publishers were proof reading The Edge of Reason, did no one think to advise her to delete this sentence? Absolutely dreadful.
Overall, I defiantly won't be rereading this book. Its few good points are horribly overweighed by the negative.

Very humorous series. Interesting "diary" format. Very casual/easy reading.

Bridget makes such poor choices and really annoys me but in a very special way. You can't help but love her even if she's difficult to really understand 😂
