This was a weird one. While having an intriguing premise and crisp artwork, the story of colder felt just a bit rushed. While I am aware of volume 2 (the bad seed), the story presented here could have benefited from either another issue or two or a more focused tone. Although considering the fact that the story is about those who are insane, this focus route would have been more of a detriment than a benefit. The greys and blues of the art bring out the cold and distant feeling of the hungry world and Nimble Jack is wonderfully bonkers, he's one of the best parts of this series. Needless to say, Colder succeeds at being a creepy, strange and interesting idea that just runs a bit too fast and leaves characters like Reece in its dust.

Dios, este tomo es más horripilante si se puede. Tiene escenas no aptas apra gente sensible. Me gustó como sigue la historia,y el final...shock.

The thing I loved about these books the most was definitely the art. The use of the whole page from the gutters to the panel edges to the saturation of colors and the watercolor style inks was beautiful and really worked for the visual medium while enhancing the written story.

The casual body horror was creepy but so well done I just couldn't get enough? Jack was horrible but I loved his character and interactions with others, whether he was hanging out with Declan or feeding from randos on the street? Just stunning

Wow, this was INSANELY good! See what I did there? No? Well, you should read this book. You'd be CRAZY not to! We wouldn't want you to go crazy, now would we?

Seriously, this book surprised the hell out of me. It's amazing on all fronts. Don't go in expecting to see anything too unique, but what you can expect is all of the best features of horror elegantly woven together into one solid package. Paul Tobin's writing is really good, but who really carried the book was Juan Ferreyra. His art is just so morbidly beautiful. First of all, let's address that cover! That has got to be THE best cover I've ever seen. So disturbing that it would make people scream at a glance. And the book is chock full of terrifyingly creative drawings just like that. Monsters made of eyes and teeth? Check. Hounds with human hands for bodies? Check. A bizarre topsy-turvy dimension that would make M. C. Escher proud? Check.

And of course let's not forget Nimble Jack, one of the best villains I've ever seen in horror, given the best Joker-like voice by Paul Tobin. Anytime I read one of his dialogue bubbles, I couldn't help but read it out loud in an insane, playful, taunting, sing-song voice. Sure, he may not be very original, but he has all the best qualities of a good villain - insanity, jest, and mind-blowing psychedelic powers (literally). The main protagonists were also very interesting and well-written. I was actually surprised how interesting Reece became by the end of the volume, and Declan's strange dichotomous personality leaves me wanting to read the second and third volumes ASAP.

And this review wouldn't be complete without mentioning how good the colorist is. Nate Piekos (of Blambot) is the perfect fit for this book. He can pull off almost any coloring style masterfully, from the bleak muted palette of the Hungry World to the bright and beautiful colors of Boston. My favorite is when he interjects the color-devoid Hungry World with a blast of red, giving the gore a visceral, impactful feel.

All in all, this team is perfect for this book and they all knocked it out of the park. I can't wait to read the next two volumes. Just in time for Halloween too!

Slow burner. Loving the artwork and hungry for more of the story. Will have to continue this series.

The illustrations in this graphic are stunning, but I found the plot a little difficult to follow (though I guess that difficulty does accurately reflect the insanity of the main character).

A fantastic start, but it got weaker towards the end, unfortunately. But drawings are amazing, and the sroty and atmosphere are awesome. All in all, love it!

La historia podría haberse hecho bastante más interesante. La traducción es horrenda. Háganle un favor a las ediciones argentinas y pónganle onda.

Art: Oof. This cover. I personally love it because body horror is the main horror genre that actually scares me. There were so many images in this that were so imaginative and gruesome. I liked the style and found it did action elements really well.

Story: I always just have to put my brain on pause for a little bit with horror dealing with the mentally ill. I personally can stomach it (as someone who has been hospitalized multiple times, sometimes involving delusions) but I would understand if someone didn't want to fuck with that. I do find this leans a little more on the sympathetic side but definitely has some troubling tropes. That aside, I was really into this story, its characters and its world-building. I'm excited to see where it goes!
