I honestly couldn't tell you too much except in the broadest strokes (and more horrifying moments) what went on in this book.
It might be because my mind glosses over battles and battle strategies whether they're in books, movies, or other media. It might be because my mind also glosses over racial essentialism and telling me "how the white man and the red man are."
I read this book (and its prequel) because they're considered classics and I thought they might be interesting. I don't plan to continue with the series after struggling through both of these books.

this book is wayyy too long and cooper uses excessive words to convey not a whole lot of meat
I appreciate Cooper's creation of a uniquely American hero at a time when our national literary identity was trying to break free from European influence, but this just isn't my kind of book.

I wasn't entirely sure what to think of this book. I liked it well enough; Cooper's descriptions are sometimes quite beautiful, and I liked the veneer of the characters. Unfortunately, I never felt that he drew his characters deeply enough, and the fact that the language is often both racist and prolix is just displeasing. I'm glad I read it, but it might have been a better use of time to just stick to the (quite different, mind you) movie.
