An incredibly difficult memoir. Emotional. Honest. Chilling.

A dark and somewhat humorous memoir of growing up surrounded by a dysfunctional drug/alcohol addicted mother who has not grown up yet. This is the story of a life no one wants to live and few people would admit to living. But on the other hand, everyone wants to read about a life like this because it is so unbelievably believable.

This book tells of the complicated relationship between a girl and her mother. A mother that is at once the centre of the girl's entire world AND the person that the girl can rely on the least. This kind of relationship, one that acknowledges the good and doesn't sugar-coat the bad is often hard to explain to outsiders and I feel that Domenica Ruta does an amazing job of doing just that.

The kind of story that seems like horrible fiction- too crazy to be true. The fact that this author survives her childhood is remarkable. The fact that she can reflect on it in such a deadpan, often funny manner is even more so.

This was a nice change from the usual memoir. I think the fact that I read it in 3 days is a better review than anything I can put here.

I didn’t like the way it constantly jumped back in forth between different periods of her life, as it made the story harder to follow. I found it to be dull at many points, though it made me laugh quite often too. But the deeper I got into it, the more bored I became. While I enjoyed parts of it, overall, I found it was just not worth the read.
