The story of protagonist Jane - who is hiding a secret - and the flashbacks to the disastrous holiday she took with a group of friends a few years previously. I couldn't put it down. The present-day thread explores the protagonist's dilemma of being watched, hounded and threatened to be "outed" for who she really is. Meanwhile, flashbacks slowly reveal to us what happened to make her be like she is today. C.L. Taylor expresses the complexities of friendship groups in this story, and in so doing weaves a tale of manipulation and deceit; one that affects all their lives in very drastic ways. Unputdownable!

Psychological thrillers are everywhere. Everyone wants to be part of that elite group of thrill writers that everyone is talking about. C.L. Taylor is definitely at that status. ‘The Lie’ is the perfect example of her hard earned place at the top. A positively frightening look at a vacation gone horribly wrong, “The Lie” drew me in from the very first page and kept me eagerly pushing forward until the last paragraph.
‘The Lie’ follows a group of four friends who go out on the “adventure of a lifetime”… a trip to Nepal where they believe they are going to a relaxing retreat to wash away all their home problems and rejuvenate by the pool with some beers. The story takes a sick turn when things are not what they expected, friendships are torn apart, and surprises lurk around every corner.
Taylor is queen of keeping you on the edge of your seat. Having read other work of hers I knew she was good. This showed me she is great. Every time I thought things were calming down and all would be well, there was another jaw-dropping moment that made me go on. Imagine at the end of your night and you are reading a few chapters before bed and you tell yourself “just one more”. That was me, but five chapters before. I couldn’t put it down. Exciting, secretive, and nerve-wracking best describes ‘The Lie’.
The story jumps back and forth between current time and five years prior, but not in a way that would typically upset me. Sometimes jumping stories confuse me or frustrate me, but this one showed the perfect lapse of how things from your past are not always kept in the past. Decisions made can come back to haunt you. C.L. Taylor did an incredible job with this book and I am now anxiously awaiting the next one. A well earned five stars.

Psychological thrillers are a whole new genre for me and I'm worried I might be addicted. The Lie by C.L. Taylor was certainly no help.
Following two timelines with one narrator, The Lie tells the story of Jane Hughes. It alternates between her current, quiet life as an animal shelter worker and the harrowing tale of her journey to Nepal with three friends.
This story has all the things I am learning to love about a good psychological thriller - an ominous setting, an unknown villain, and creepy mystery throughout. I simply could not put it down!
While I can't handle the graphic violence in horror novels, the few incidents described in this books were intense, but no so much that it was going to give me nightmares. Don't get me wrong, there are scary parts, but they are not prurient.

Unfortunately this book just did not do it for me. I expected a lot of suspense and thrill and mystery. I did not get that. Very early on I found myself not caring what happened. The writing and plot just weren't enough to keep me reading. If more mystery and suspense had been present and the storyline more captivating I would have tried harder to finish this book. Also the overall writing style itself wasn't very that good. I DNFed this book at 50%.

A very interesting story of 4 friends who goes for a trip of a lifetime to discover facets of their friendship which had been hidden in varied forms. The undercurrents of resentment, jealousy, inferiority amongst the 4 friends are usually overlooked when each has their own life to live in between work and daily grinds. But once forced together for a length of time in a close quarter with very manipulative people around, things deteriorate rapidly and each of them are faced with hard choices.
It was a very good thriller with twists and turns that keeps the reader entertained but the main part of the story involving the cult and their ways were a bit too dramatic.

This is a very well-written suspenseful book. I liked the characters and their interactions. Most of all I enjoyed that it felt real. On the one hand it dealt nicely with the relationship of the four "friends". Furthermore, I believed the reactions of Emma's friends to be quite realistic. No overly dramatic break-ups or abandonment. The characters actually talk to each other and show empathy to resolve the situation and deal with her secrets.
The only thing I have to fault would be that the plot in Nepal is predictable. It doesn't really take away from the suspense of the story as a whole, but I was missing something new to the idea.

Overall I really enjoyed this book! I guessed some of the things that would happen, but overall was continually surprised, which is what I want in a good thriller. This book sucked me in and I could hardly put it down before finishing it because I couldn't wait to know what happened! Definitely recommend if you love thrillers!
The first book in a while that truly gripped me. Diverse characters and a good plot in both the past and present sections. I've read a couple recently that have swapped time frames out of chronological order which has been confusing. This was not the case with The Lie. I recommend this, it's worth it and you'll find yourself asking questions long after you finish.
Well this book had me hooked. I absolutely loved it, I’ve been on the edge of my seat with all the twists and turns in this one. Leanne is a great example of how it’s hard to find adult friends that you can trust. This is a definite must read. Definitely deserving of more than five stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
