"She did not like to picture them here. Two little boys, playing games on the unfinished hardwood. A child, a baby. No mother had been good here. No father had been kind. Saffy new abandonment, she knew tragedy, she knew loneliness. She knew violence, from the lifetime she had spent chasing it—she knew how it lingers, how it stained. Violence always left its fingerprint."

I liked it, but didn’t love it! I’d still recommend reading it because it gets you thinking and causes you to place yourself in a situation that you would never imagine. This story follows Ansel, who is on Death Row with 12 hours to go. It flips POV between Ansel and the dwindling hours to his execution, and the different women in his life that will eventually lead to his conviction. I found this story very interesting in how it was written, gets you thinking and caused me to imagine what it would be like to be in his shoes. However, despite it being only 300 pages, it felt a bit dragged out.
