Wanted to like it but didn't much. It was a writing style that I just couldn't get to grips with, I found it difficult to follow at times, mostly due to the scatter brain approach to the lead character's thoughts. I kept thinking whilst reading that it was in first person and was surprised when the lead was mentioned in third person. The cardinal sin though for a mystery novel was I found my inability to follow it meant that I didn't know enough about the mystery to care.
The writer has an in-depth knowledge of slasher movies but the constant referencing of them felt a little like stroking he ego of other people who knew the same information.
It did provide a Native horror story, a genre that has often misrepresented, misappropriated and just been plainly racist to Native people so this was a really pleasing aspect to it. I had heard good things and I think the issue may be with my clunky brain not 'getting' the novel so I am going to try one of the author's other well reviewed books 'The Only Good Indians' to see if I like that any better.

gave this another shot after DNFing it for the protag being insufferably annoying (and only because I recently read The Only Good Indians and really enjoyed it). I was able to get through it this time, and it did end up getting better, but I still didn't love it

Plot was fairly slow and too much of the main character's internal monologue to really get me into the story.

This was one of the best books I’ve read in years, thoroughly entertaining with fantastically developed characters in a new, authentic voice. If you are a horror movie fan you will get a kick out of our heroin, and even if you’re not I think this book is a must read.
