The beginning starts a little slow and confusing, but after 60 pages it transformed into a true piece of art. One of the best fantasy books I've read in a long time.
I'd rather live with a thing done poorly than do nothing and always wonder how things could have been.
I have never read a fantasy book with so much action. It's like the story is a never-ending battle. It didn't bother me but I must admit it was hard to imagine the fights with all the details. I might have missed a puch or two but it was fun

This book was amazing. I have a book hangover right now because I was so into this. I usually don't do well with fantasy as audiobooks, but this was the only way I could get my hands on this book without paying outrageous shipping so I went for it. The narrator was phenomenal, but I do think there were parts of this book I would have understood better if I had been reading it physically. So in the end...I paid the outrageous shipping and this beauty is on it's way to me hahah. I will definitely be doing a physical re-read. Hopefully before the second book comes out later this year.
The magic system here is so unique. I feel like its everything The Poppy War wanted to be but couldn't quite get right (don't come for me). The idea of getting powers from another godly realm was explained in understandable pieces throughout the story, and by the end, all of the knowledge came together and had serious effects on the characters and the world. Magic also has real consequences in this story and I loved that aspect.
The characters were great, and they always acted in way that were consistent with their characterization. I wanted to punch Tao in the face multiple times for being so damn stubborn, but it's that stubbornness that allows him to be as great as he is. I liked that Winter didn't take away that aspect of his personality when it would have been convenient. Characters made decisions based on the person we knew them to be, not to further the plot.
I will say though, if you don't like blow by blow battles scenes or military heavy fantasy, you probably will not like this book. We spend a significant amount of page time in the nitty-gritty gory center of battles. This does play a key point in the story and none of it is wasted time, but if that's not your thing, just be aware going in.
And that ending....whyyyyy Evan Winter? Whyyyy :(
CANNOT WAIT for the next installment!

I read this puppy in like three days. The beginning was a little difficult to get into, but once I was able to connect with Tau's character, I was all in.
War strategy fantasy is apparently a fave sub-genre for me. I really enjoyed reading about Tau's training and growth as a warrior. There were a few moments where I felt the story didn't flow quite as well as it could but hoping the sequel rounds out those edges. Coming off the heels of reading The Poppy War series, I am interested in comparing the two stories once I have finished Winter's work.
Read this book on a warm day in the sun.
