The Rage of Dragons

I absolutely don't see the hype of this book.

First, why does the title even have the word dragon in it if this isn't even about dragons. Dragons are MENTIONED for about a page in the very beginning. The rest of the book, zero dragons. It's about some guy with a vengeance and he battles demons...I think? It was kind of unclear. All I know is it's NOT about dragons! Ugh

The first maybe 50-100 pages were promising. The entire rest of the book is the same thing happening over and over again. He trains/battles, gets severely hurt, heals, trains/battles again. Repeat. The whole book. So bored. I completely lost interest.

I got excited for an African inspired epic fantasy and it is not that at all. Not even epic in the slightest. And, aside from the characters having African names, there is no African folklore or anything. Disappointed.

I'm sad because the title and cover look right up my alley. And the blurb sounded awesome too. Feel wayyyy short for me.

Definitely remove the word 'dragons' from the title. It's quite deceiving since this story isn't even about dragons and they aren't even in it except for maybe a page or two?

3.5 stars.

Well that was certainly a change of pace.

That was….a lot of fighting scenes described. And….a lot of titles and class systems to understand. Through the first 100 pages, I wasn’t sure.

Despite some frustrations with our main protagonist, this was a fast paced, fun, whirlwind of a read.

Think I’ll go for a few palate cleansers before I look to tackle the next in this series.

This book was overhyped by “book-tubers” - it has a fairly straightforward plot (revenge) and is very slow getting started for someone who doesn’t care for excessive descriptions of battles and fighting. It was interesting about differences in the ways of fighting among the different groups of fighters but that got stale with overuse. It does get a little more interesting in plot in about the last 20% and there is some interest in what might happen next in the next volume of the series. Of course the main villain gets away and is regrouping. Of course Tau is now blessed by the queen to continue his revenge quest and save the kingdom. If the series will become a trilogy, I can’t see Tau dying in the next volume.

4.5/5

pretty good fantasy book with a unique African-inspired setting. The book really gets going about 20% in and it was pretty easy to read from then on with the plot momentum. I don't really /like/ Tau as a character yet, but I did find myself really wanting to read on and witness his dedication to his goal. Will surely continue this series to also check in on the likeable secondary characters, and follow the story, which isn't as straightforward as I thought it would be.
