A bit conflicted on this book. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book that I couldn’t put. The story kept me wanting to read “just a bit longer”. until I was up way longer than I should’ve been. :-) But at the same time, I was really frustrated with Tau and the blind rage. It just felt over the top. Hoping the 2nd book reins it in a bit.
Where do we even start? This was intense, Evan Winter did a thing here. From the world building, to the characters and the plot everything just worked perfectly.
The story is so possessive and attention grabbing to a point whereby I couldn’t focus on other books, despite reading two other books at the same time. I found myself glued to this book and finished it under three days.
Intensive world building, I liked how rich the history of The Omehi people kept on being explained as the story goes, the family dynamics, how people are gifted and chosen. It’s a concept that’s been done before but Evan Winter made it a bit magical, both literally and figuratively, the Xhosa-inspired characters and names brought the storyline even closer home for me, refreshing.
The book is mostly character driven, we follow Tau as he goes through this transition and transformation process at isikolo, a lot of character development happens. I like how flawed Tau is, sometimes he acts out of head rush without thinking, he’s driven by vengeance and it can be understandable at times but he also knows when to take an L. He’s determined about being a better fighter and he understands he can’t just ask for a duel and kill those who took everything away from him without having a strategy, complete the challenge and win the contests then your time for vengeance will come. Tau learns the importance of teamwork as he goes through the academy, and I like how each member of his team tries to help him become a better fighter and a better team player without undermining that he’s already a brilliant worrier on his own but as part of a team he would be greater, even the big man Uduek. Zuri was the antidote that Tau never knew he needed, her role can never be undermined.
I still want to see more of this new alliance Tau formed and this new position he took at the end of the book, and I hope to see more dragons, I understand the prize to use them is heavy but what’s magic without a prize?

I waited for this book from the library for almost a year. It was kinda hard to keep reading. Not much happened in the book for how long it is. The book was fine. Not for me. Lots of fighting, graphic violence and a very forced love story. I'm glad to check it off my list, though.
