For how fast-paced this book is, it's surprisingly repetitive. For being supposedly a matriarchal society, this book has very few women voices. For this world having a very rich culture and magical system, we're shown very little of it. Despite all its shortcoming, I loved this book. It is a nonstop, action-packed book that is ultimately about revenge, and I am a sucker for a good revenge story. Despite being incredibly dark it doesn't lack hope. I'm incredibly excited for the rest of the books in this series.

I don't have much to add beyond the fact that everyone describing this as "compulsively readable" are correct. It's not reinventing the genre, but if you enjoy a satisfying and fairly uncomplicated progression narrative, you'll find it here. 3.5 stars

I don't like to be that person but I really did not enjoy it. For all the popularity it got, it just fell flat for me. Could have been reduced to 200 pages max for all the story it told. Was there even any Dragons? I can't even recall but the fact that I have to think about it says enough. Too many prep battles and even when the big one came it was meh. I don't like to DNF books so I forced myself to finish this one. If others liked it, no problem. It just wasn't for me. I will not be continuing this series.

I wanted to like this more than I did based off other reviews. The story was good, but it had a so many fight scenes that they ran together in my head. The characters were interesting. I did get mad so much as the racism in the culture, not at the author but just at the characters. In a way it made sense, but didn't make it any less difficult to read. I wasn't sure if I'd continue the series until the epilogue, then I was really intrigued to continue.
