I was not expecting to love this book. I used one of my audible credits on it by accident and when I realized it weeks later I figured it would at least be good background noise for when I do dishes and cook dinner. Boy was I surprised when the prologue grabbed my attention and I realized I stood there, water running, just listening to the events unfold. It consumed me and I listened to it every chance I got, finishing it in 2 short days of house chores and many walks, traveling much further than originally intended just so I didn’t have to turn it off.

This book had everything I want: strong world building, interesting magic system, excellent pacing, unique setting, violence, and revenge. There is even a little romance and a single sex scene. I’m listening to it on audible and the narrator is excellent (second favorite behind Podehl). If you struggle with fantasy words, I suggest audible over reading it. Also, it hyped me up to get into the gym or really just do anything physical.

Fantasy, adult hunger games with the Omehi people who have been fighting a losing war for 200 years. The narrator was great but it might be easier to have a physical copy so you can refer to the glossary. If you like action this is the book for you. For me though, it was too much action and not enough plot.

Tau was singularly focused on vengeance which made him one demential. The society seems to be matriarchal, but the book is 95% men with hardly any women to be included as a part of the story.

For a book of the name "Rage of Dragons" hardly a dragon to be seen!

The world building was well done. I loved the African inspired culture of the different societies. I wish there had been even more about the world, maybe it's in book two. With no character development or plot (beyond being at war for reasons either unknown or not mentioned) Rage of Dragons left me underwhelmed after all the hype.

wait this was really entertaining

One of my favorite debut novels ever.

Usually takes me awhile to get sucked into a world and themes of a story but Evan Winter decides to throw us into the chaos from the jump. Showing the cruel and brutal world we have in this book with waring factions, the Omehi which are filled with commons and nobles and their gifted (Basically mystical woman who have powers) as they break through and kill the savages.

The main story focuses on Tau, a common with no gifts, semi-weak, and a strong-willed father to push him through life. Tau doesn't have much going for him, and he really wants to just skate by at the start of it all in life, avoiding war if possible.

That changes though, as events unfold and people are slaughter for the smallest thing. This undeserving fate leads Tau down a path of vengeance. Declaring death upon those who have done him wrong. He trains and fights in a military function only to gain person strength to kill all those who have done him wrong.

While the story itself seems typical in a sense, the characters, settings, and tone are excellent. We get great pacing with brutal battles that rekindled my flame of novel fights the same way the Red Rising series did. Every battle you could feel the crunch and bones breaking, heads splitting, blood spraying, and you either love or not, but it works so well.

Tau is a excellent character IMO of someone who fights his way to the top. Never does it feel like he isn't deserving of the strength and raw power he gains through hard work and determination. The side cast is also well done, and while some meet a swift and brutal faith, a lot of them stick with you with only a couple of scenes.

I do hope in the next book we get a bit more bonding and understanding of the side cast. I like them but I want to grow to love them like I did Tau.

The setting is excellent. Basically Black Panther and Game of Thrones had a baby, with the intensity of Red Rising battles, and you have this special gift to us. Do yourself and read this if you like fantasy just a bit. It's not usually my genre but this is EXCELLENT.

A 4.5 out of 5.
