Absolutely blown away that this is a debut. Winter is able to right such visually evocative scenes that makes this feel like a cinematic production. But that is not at the cost of great characterization and development for our main and side characters. Tau and his revenge story inceptions reminds me a lot of Daro from Red Rising - he makes mistakes, lets his anger get the better of him, and despite being expertly trained allows his emotions to betray is training, but he doesn’t have the same whininess that Daro has that really turned me off in Golden Son.
Can’t wait to see where this goes.

This was fantastic. I’ve read some 5 star books recently but this one needs a 6th just to set its self apart. Enough to keep you engaged the whole time. It almost worries me for the rest of the series and hope it doesn’t disappoint.
Tau has enough going so that yoy wanna root for him but other times you want to slap him and put him in his place.
Only negative I can say is the language and the words. All names, titles, etc are so unfamiliar and foreign. It’s good for creating your own world but for the reader it’s hard to read words constantly with a silent letter in front. I still can’t pronounce most titles and don’t really know the difference between them because they are so foreign and odd. But once you get past the weird language it’s fantastic.

Starting off with the good:
The Setting: 5* - It is so refreshing to see new takes on fantasy worldbuilding, drawing from sources other than just medieval European history. The world Winter presents is concise and engaging, as is the magic that runs through it.
The Hype: 5* - I am a sucker for good action and hype. The build up of the main character and the tension that follows is top notch, and really leads to some "can't put it down" climaxes and epic moments.
The bad:
The Characters/Plot: 2* - I may be overly harsh. This story is not bad, by any stretch. However, it is also nothing new. It is a completely standard revenge plot focused on a character living out a dark power fantasy. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but to truly rate a story higher than this, for me, it either needs to show me something new, or combine disparate elements in a truly beautiful and efficient way.
In summary, this was still a promising first novel from Winter. Interesting and intricate characters and plot are something that will almost certainly come with time. I will still be reading the rest of the series and his future books with optimistic anticipation.

Animal cruelty is implied, not described and it's a dragon.
Essential reading for any DM who has struggled with narrating the long and tedious combat of low-level D&D sessions. Great worldbuilding too.
