Listen. When I first finished this book, I thought yeah this a 4/5. I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did and somehow I ended up loving it? Then a few weeks passed and I found myself thinking about it all the time. Going back to it constantly. I realized I was irrationally obsessed. I say irrationally because is it the best writing/plot/characters? No. But Rooney found a way to carve herself right into my little heart.
original:
Sally Rooney is incredibly skilled. Her writing is extremely intimate, almost to the point of discomfort. Her observations on the mundane daily life of her characters, their gestures, and the environment surrounding them is profound. She always leaves me craving more and I finish each of her novels disturbed yet seeing the world around me in a vastly different perspective.

However, she seems to create like 99% of the conflict in the book by being withholding for no apparent reason, so. I don’t know if that’s supposed to be the point? Like she doesn’t reveal anything about herself as a means of seeming more interesting, but ultimately hurts the people who are already interested in her by doing so? Also for a book called conversations with friends she seems spend a lot of time avoiding conversations… with her friends.
I will say I had to google a chapter by chapter synopsis of everything that happened because I found it all blended together by the end.

Viewing Conversations with Friends as a stand-alone novel, without considering Sally Rooney's other novels, I enjoyed the plot and found many of the characters' thoughts relatable. The way she describes all the unique relationships between the main character Frances, her ex-girlfriend Bobbi, and the married couple Nick and Melissa is exhilarating. All of them are flawed and have their own motives. As Frances narrates the story, it's hard to find any of the characters completely likable. But I found myself rooting for different characters at different times in the novel.
As the story progresses, Frances continues to develop as a person, grow up, and figure out more and more what she wants, who she is, and what she is capable of. It was fulfilling to see Frances come to conclusions at the end that I, as a reader, an outsider, had made from the beginning.
While I like Sally Rooney's novels, I have to say that this time I was in part only able to empathize with the main character and find her transformation interesting because I am the same age (21) as her. I had higher hopes for Conversations With Friends and have to admit that I was a little disappointed.

Similarly to Normal People it also covers some heavy topic material and has a number of trigger warnings.

Realistically, I can't really say I enjoyed it, I mostly feel neutral about it. There really wasn't anything I liked or specifically didn't like about it. It was just a book. One comment I had was how focused on sex it was, which for me is something I just don't enjoy reading in a book. For other people I'm sure that's not a real problem, but for me it was.
