This book is amazing! Every time I pick it up I can feel myself being absorbed into the delicate imagery, into the very raw depiction of its themes.
To have a voice that is so eloquent at what it does, that fits into my mind as though it is my own, is perfect. I know the story doesn’t say a lot about choice, Evelyn by no means chooses his fate in having a sex change, but the transformation of one gender to another is very real. It is a metamorphosis that is so great that it resonates in my core.
I have actually always enjoyed Carter’s work, when people said her other work ‘The Bloody Chamber’ was pornographic or sickening, I was always charmed by the descriptive talents this feminist writer has. She has looked at gender, and has looked at the construction of gender through the change, and finally she has shown that gender is just a construct created by reality. She has shown this through her use of magical realism to toe the line between reality and fiction. Reality is a construct, therefore gender is also a construct. They are both narratives which are being deconstructed.
This work is graphic, but that’s exactly what makes you think, makes you question and makes you feel. You go on a journey with the unlikable original narrator who seems so distant, melting into the voice of Eve who becomes a woman by societies standards, by realities standards, by her own standards. She is a woman and she is not. She is moral and she is not. She is a hero and she is not.
I definitely recommend ‘The Bloody Chamber’ lovers to read this. Also anyone who is up for off the charts craziness and twists, give this a go.

This synopsis sums it up quite perfectly. However, there is so much that happens throughout the book, like Zero's seven wives that play apart of Evelyn's continued understanding of women. I thought this book needed to have time spent to it. I started reading it for school and only got 50 pages in but it intrigued me so much I wanted to finish it. I finally finished the day before I left England. Granted, I kept the book.
This book doesn't need to be read by anybody in particular but it would be interesting to see how other people reacted to it since no one else I knew finished it.
This book gets so confusing at times, especially within the last couple chapters. There was one part where they were in one place and then next thing I knew there was a new person there and they were talking about something different. Super confusing. Anyway I probably won't read it again but if you want something nontraditional this is definitely the book for you.
3 out of 5 stars, but worth the read

Beautiful and wildly imaginative writing. My rating (as with all my ratings) have more to do with the fact that it isn't the kind of reading that I'm looking for at the moment.
haha lol wtf angela??
- srsly this feels very dated in every aspect: gender identity and relations, race, sex, transness, everything. a powerful image of the myths that concerned a strand of white feminism at a very specific time and place, though, so i guess it is at least a document of how much we have overcome already.

I’m biased because I wrote my diss on this but Carter was so ahead of her time on aspects on the fluidity of gender and this novel really show cases this. The plot is full of twists and grotesque feminist satire which I love. So rich in references and reworkings of myths as well whether that be from Ancient Greek, Christian or Freudian.

Well. This was a trip in a strange sci-fi 70's world.
Trigger warnings for a lot of things that you might not expect, as well as rape and abuse.
