"You must never do anything that might expose our secret. This means that, in general, you cannot form close bonds with humans. You can speak to us, and you can always commune with the Ocean, but you are deadly to humans. You are, essentially, a weapon. A very beautiful weapon. I won't lie to you, it can be a lonely existence, but once you are done, you get to live. All you have to give, for now, is obedience and time..."
The same speech has been given hundreds of times to hundreds of beautiful girls who enter the sisterhood of sirens. Kahlen has lived by these rules for years now, patiently waiting for the life she can call her own. But when Akinli, a human, enters her world, she can't bring herself to live by the rules anymore. Suddenly the life she's been waiting for doesn't seem nearly as important as the one she's living now.
I thought the start of this book was really slow and boring. I did not like Kahlen. It was an interesting concept, just not well executed.

the lore and sisterhood of sirens…very sweet. was giving ‘the little mermaid’ in the way of the harsh realities of the siren’s song and loosing their voices. didn’t love the main character but her siren sisters illuminated sisterhood in such a beautiful way.

“Whatever happened, I'd met my person, the one my soul connected to.”
I read this one a while back and I have sort of forgotten the majority of the book, however, I remember really enjoying this one when I read it over the summer.
I really enjoyed how the ocean felt very much like an actual person and character and was not some enigma. The chemistry that all the sisters had with each other and the ocean was really nice to see, and I really like the dynamic that they had. It felt like they had a strong sister bond and it was really unique to read about,
Also, the forbidden love that Akinli and Khalen had was pretty nice to read about. It was light-hearted and fast-paced, but I’d wish that Keira Cass had written even more about the relationship that Akinli and Khalen had. I thought that the relationship that they had was sweet, but I think that if we had a bit more detail and more ‘story’ to their relationship, we could have had an even stronger dynamic between them.
It wasn't groundbreaking, but it was enjoyable and really fun to read. Anyways, I thought that this was a very fun and lighthearted read that I would definitely recommend to anyone needing a good summer romance to dive into.

Very cute, fated mates with a siren/mermaid twist. I did like this more than all of The Selection series. Immersive and cool siren world building. I like that the ocean itself is a character of sorts. The characters are fun, I think there was a few things that could have been more fleshed out or was partly unneeded for the story progression. I liked the characters and the story, but I saw the ending coming from a mile away.
