A rather curious book - I went in without reading the summary but I thought it was a middle grade book. The characters' ages are never stated (as far as I caught!), and the amount of swearing that went on as well as the themes
main character death, divorce, cheating
make this seem more of a YA book, but the characters acted as though they were younger...? And older at the same time...? I'm really not sure what to make of this one!

It's a mostly gentle story of spending Vinga spending the summer on a remote Swedish island with her grandfather, escaping from troubles at home 'on the mainland'. One of the things she is doing is building/renovating a boat ready to be sail worthy, and the narration really annoyed me here, as they didn't know what a lot of the boat terminology was, pronouncing 'gunwhales' etc incorrectly, but that will only annoy you if know anything about boats!

The soft romance between the two female MCs was 'sweet', but with undercurrents of a lot more going on... I don't know whether it was the translation (originally written in Swedish) or the writing itself, but I felt this book didn't really know what it was doing/where it was going... I'd be so curious to know what the author was intending with this book - although when you put a book 'into the open' it is, of course, down to the reader to make what they want of it...

I just don't know! The inconsistency of how old these girls were was confusing - Vinga seemed to be about 10 years old sometimes, and then 16 a few moments later. This may all have been intentional and I could have missed the point, but this book is really quite confusing me!

2.5, an interesting read...
