I really enjoyed this. It felt really gentle and yet subtly drew you in and dealt an emotional blow. It is beautifully written and I liked the way it developed. I'm not sure whether the beautiful, almost musical writing is the responsibility of the author or translator or both, but I found it lovely to read. It pulled at my emotions while gently comforting at the same time.

The blurb made this sound like such a good read but in reality, I was disappointed.

The storyline was disjointed and flat, there was no chemistry between the two girls, Vinga just wanted to work on her boat and spend time with her Grandpa, Ruth was bored out of her mind on the island and hated everything Vinga loved. I can't understand why they would even be friends, let alone anything more. Apart from being the only two young people on the island, they had nothing in common. Also their ages were a little vague.

The background story of Vinga's parents was also boring. It was made into too big a deal whereas more time could be spent with Ruth, maybe if we spent more time with her, we'd see some form of chemistry develop

What a book! It was so full of life i loved it. Makes me miss the beaches by my grandparents home. I loved the main character and her grandpas story and i think the writing flowed pretty well. I think a book is always good when it leaves you wanting more (i understand this was the perfect length at the same time though). It could have been nice if there was a little more backstory into certain characters but I don't think it took away from the story regardless. I'll definitely reread it in the future.

As someone in their 30s I definitely wasn’t in the target audience. Cute but young and angsty.
