What a beautiful book. The story flowed effortlessly for me which made it such a quick read. The relationship between Vinga & her grandfather made my heart swell.
I adored their quirky friendship and how, a girl who feels invincible (despite the bold, colourful clothes she wears), is seen by her Granddad. He might be the only one who truly understands her.

There are deeper themes/issues that are in the background that don’t really get explored, but I think it speaks to the innocence and immaturity of Vinga.

There is a sweet gay romance when Vinga meets Ruth. Ruth is the complete opposite of Vinga, but again, under the surface, she is just as lonely & insecure. However, we only get brief fleeting moments between the 2 and so it’s not the romance I was expecting/hoping for.

And, no word of a lie, this made me cry! The last chapter had the tears flowing.

Content/Trigger Warning: The story deals with death and divorce.

Thank you NetGalley and Bonnier Books UK, for the arc. This is my honest review.

This is a difficult one to rate. It’s 3.75 ⭐️, so rounded up to 4 ♥️

I enjoyed this sweet short read. It was simple but well done. Super easy to follow along with and get lost in.

A quick summery read. I’m a bit confused since the book seemed to have no overall plot to follow and nothing much changed from beginning to end, but maybe it wasn’t meant to. It was written differently then I realised it would be, but I honestly didn’t mind. I feel like the summary on the back of my book tricked me a little, cause it definitely led up to more romance between Vinga and this mystery girl, so I was pretty disappointed when Ruth felt more like a side character that we never really got to know properly? And all their times together felt a bit rushed and not detailed - and again, ending was a bit sudden and very open.

And spoiler - Grandpas death was so unnecessary!!

Really enjoyed this short book. Just one that caught my eye in the library because of the nice gay cover and blurb, and ended up being a lot more than that. Made me feel calm.

How do I keep picking up childrens/middle grade audiobooks about children qith sad deptessed moms? Agh feelings
A lovel story with touching emotional beats. A story about trying to escape from teoubles at home and tfuibg to make sense of it and growing
It was mentioned that the main character might be autistic partway through and i clocked that (also grandpa giving me that autistic vibe, no wonder they got along so well). I think it is noticable without being overwhelming or insulting.
God I grew up on Astrid Lindgren and the idk there is a sort of vibe to sweadish children's books idk. Maybe im projecting
Also shout out to letting children say fuck. Shout out to that one reviewer on goodreads who was aghast by use of fuck. I wonder if that might be a quirk of translation, perhaps the swear in Sweadish didint feel as strong haha

Spoiler: idk if grandpa dying at the end was necessery for the themes of the books to ring out. I guess its about not being able to come back to what was there and how you cannot hold on to everything forever but man this girl is gonna have so much tthungs to work through in therapy when she grows up

I do like this trend in publishing to have stories about children with troubled home lives and,/or parents. I think it's very realistic to what many children go through and it means a lot to see stories about children similar to them. I don't think i ever read a book protagonist with divorced parents etc when i was a child and i think it would have meant a lot to me. It touches the larts of me close to my heart even now

Audiobook bardator also did a good job. She also have characters scandinavian accents without it being obtrusive or forced feeling while also making them sound different from each other which was fun.

Pretentious, boring, and unnecessarily sad. Don't trust the cute cover, this book is mostly gloomy, and the romance is not the main focus of the story, nor is it a good one anyways.
