An award-winning novel about family, old and new, friendship growing into romance, the beauty of the sea, and a hot summer on a Swedish island
Vinga dreams of the sea. She's going to be a sailor when she grows up, sailing to distant lands. At home, back in the city, Mum is sad, and Dad has left for good. But here with Granddad on the island, all her problems feel far away. Summer goes on as usual, with porridge for breakfast, drinking rhubarb lemonade under the lilac tree and watching the sunset from 'her' cliff.
But things are different now, too. The heat vibrates during the day, and a girl with a black hat has started appearing. Her name is Ruth. The only thing they seem to have in common is their age and that they are both on the island for the summer. But spending time together, their friendship soon turns out to be something much more.
Rhubarb Lemonade is a story filled with empathy and heart about an unusual summer when childhood comes to an end.
Translated from the original Swedish by A. A. Prime
I really enjoyed listening to the audio version of this book. It was quite lyrical and dreamy, and I loved the relationship between Vinga and her grandfather!
Elderly members of our families are so important. They can share so much wisdom, truth, and love, and that's what this book had at the heart of it.

I would definitely recommend this LGBTQ+ Young Adult fiction romance novel.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me! 🤓

It was interesting as I normally really dislike slice of life books but something about the setting was engaging. It also dealt with family separation and divorce and a teenager's perspective that I haven't seen written that way before. Grandpa is the best character, hands down. "You can ignore anything, except a stone in your shoe" is going to stay with me.

I think this book suffered from poor advertising.
From what I've seen, this was originally published under the title "Waiting for Wind" (in Swedish), and the blurb I read for that book seems more accurate to what I read.
This was described as a summer coming of age romance with focuses on family. Which is wasn't really.
This is about a girl who feels out of place in the city she lives and whose family is falling apart. She travels to spend summer with her grandfather on a remote island, which is where she feels a peace. The story is about her coming to terms with what's happening on the mainland (with her family and her life) whilst being out in her safe place.
I don't think I was the right audience for this book - I found our main character confusing, I found her mum's actions confusing, I found why Ruth was included in the way she is confusing.
I understand what the story is about now but when I picked this up, it was the complete opposite of what I was expecting which means I struggled to enjoy it.
If you are a young teenager and you're going through a difficult time, maybe pick this up, with the knowledge that it's not a romance, but it is about overcoming challenges and coming of age.
