Holy crud. I haven’t had a book grab me like that since House of Earth and Blood. It’s honestly nice to know I still *can* get this invested in a book. More than once now even!

The exposition with Violet randomly reciting history lessons to distract herself was a bit awkward, and the world building in general is definitely “don’t think about it too hard because logic isn’t in residence.”

But the prose is super readable to the point that I fell right into the narrative within paragraphs. I loved the dragons. Loved the main human characters. Loved the twists. Parts of the book made me cry I got so emotionally invested. I’m jazzed about this new universe and I can’t wait to read the sequels.

So that’s a five star to me despite the flaws. Loved it.
