This was between 3.5-4 stars for me, which is sad because the first section of this book was 4.5 star territory.
I loved the growth, introspection and consideration of Percy as a character. But I disliked that we didn’t get to see the same for Joe. And as a result the ended felt rushed because we didn’t get to fully form Joe as a character.
Really the brevity of this book is its downfall. I wanted more - in a way this novel falls short of delivering. More showing of their dynamic as it changes through the years, more building towards the ending and more reality post the ending to validate or complicate the decisions made.
The music commentary was an interesting part of this, especially how songs could embody emotions and stages of life so completely. However, I don’t know if the fact that I didn’t know a great deal of the music being reference (‘02 baby here) made that easier to accept at face value. Perhaps if you had your own opinions about the music, it may feel more consequential to the narrative itself.
Overall, after the first section I was left just wanted more from the rest of the novel, and the more never materialised.
