First off, this book has amazing interpersonal relationships and a fascinating plot. This was enough to keep me reading. However, the pacing is off. It feels a bit like two different books crammed together. They certainly build on one another, but the first half is focused on women's rights and social constructs with a little bit of fairy magic, while the latter half is all fairies. And the conflicts of each build slowly and are then resolved in the blink of an eye. It was an enjoyable book and I think the author is a capable writer, but there needed to be more editing for pacing and flow.

What this book did well:
The main characters felt real and their relationships push the core of the first half of the book. Both the sisters in their typical sibling push and pull while still loving each other as well as Jack (Alaine's husband) who is the most wholesome person.
There is a unique blend of fae lore mixed up in American folk lore, and it honestly works. The story telling of the grandmother, the family's history with the fae, and the community's reliance on bargaining make for a fascinating preface.
Where this book struggles:
The pacing! In the first half, it's mostly social situations and many of them are low stakes. I found myself looking forward to the parts with the abusive husband only because it felt like something mattered. During the second half, the point we thought were were leading up to is wrapped up in a paragraph and a new issue is introduced. I will grant the new conflict is heavily foreshadowed, but some justice for the original issue, please? We spent a very long first half of the book to get there.

"In the early 1900s, two sisters must navigate the magic and the dangers of the Fae in this enchanting and cozy historical fantasy about sisterhood and self-discovery."
This was pretty meh in my opinion... I love books about the Fae, and this had the idea...

I really enjoyed this book up until the end, which I found quite disappointing for several reasons. On the positive side, the writing is very good. The story is absolutely worth reading. 3-stars just means it won't be making it to my favorites list.
Without giving any spoilers, the ending just seemed somewhat slapdash in contrast to the otherwise seemingly well plotted out story. I found some of the characters' choices difficult to imagine them making, and I was really unsatisfied with the way things were left overall.
