What a lovely book to read-- not so much a thrilling plot as it is a story of wonderful, emotion-filled prose. The world in miniature. Well worth the read.

This was the softest story about the early years of an old man’s life. I felt like it was story time on Pap’s lap, listening to all his achievements and mistakes throughout his life. More importantly, this was about love—in all its forms. It was one of the most challenging reads style-wise for me, but once I took it slow and really absorbed his world, it was end game. So many paragraphs and pages struck me that this book ended up heavily annotated. They really vibrated in my soul, showing how life looks when you’re young and naïve.

This is a subtle book that doesn’t have anything wildly dramatic going on, but the way it jumps around his adolescent years and the people who made an impact (but didn’t stay) really hit home. So many silent, important factors shape you into who you are. It’s a book I don’t want to overly explain, because I think it’s best to step into it knowing it’s one to relax with and let surprise you. I would consider this a classic of our time—yes, it’s that good.

Slow and kind of boring. There was a bit of humor but interspersed with WAY too many words.

The pace is slow, convoluting, making stops, and taking detours - just as any great story teller would know how to do. Along the way, Williams distils pearls of wisdom, and it is a true pleasure to read through. 

I am sorry to say I myself was never quite in the right mood for this book... But there's a beauty in its stillness and profoundness in its simple philosophy.
