niall williams carries on the brilliant history and culture of irish storytelling in this novel. it is probably the most irish book i’ve ever read. the writing was comforting, tender, beautiful, and wryly entertaining in some parts. the characters and setting were so interesting, to the point where the village’s community life seeped through the pages and came alive. there were definitely slow and mundane moments, which i don’t think necessarily took away from the book but actually enhanced the story.

At the time youre living it you can sometimes think your life is nothing much. I's ordinary and everyday and should be and could be in this or that way better. It is without the perspective by which any meaning can be derived because its too sensual and urgent and immediate, which is the way life is to be lived. We're all, all the time, striving, and though that means there's a more-or-less constant supply of failure, it's not such a terrible thing if you think that we keep on trying.

Heather didn't tell me to read this quiet Irish story but I am certainly glad I did. No/Know will stay with me for a very long time.
