The Night Watch

3.73 AVERAGE

Not a fan of her writing style, exceedingly descriptive, drawn-out and, to me, often boring

Wanted to give this 3.5 stars. Really well written and researched, but wartime stuff isn't my thing.

Sarah Waters is a goddess. As one reviewer wrote, she could make watching paint dry seem fascinating.

Excellent novel- realistic and gritty potrayal of life during and after WW II. Loved the characters and how the story was told in reverse. All the pieces fell into place..

I cannot separate my evaluation of the book from the narration done by Juanita McMahon. She did an exceptional job, made fantastic voice, sang, did sound effects, made me laugh out loud. The book itself is beautiful: very slow, moving, tender, evocative. I will certainly be reading more from this author.

Didn't think I was going to make it through this book. A shame as I really like Sarah Water's work. The narcissistic lesbian, the girl falling for the married man, the weak-willed youth. Didn't care for any of these characters. Not even the setting of WWII London bombings could inject excitement into the life's of these dull, dull characters.

I am a little surprised to find that many share the opinion that this is one of Waters’s lesser works. I loved this richly detailed novel set in WWII London. This was one of my favorite books so far this year and I liked it more than [b:Fingersmith|45162|Fingersmith|Sarah Waters|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1266458291s/45162.jpg|1014113]-I found that book to be so suspenseful to almost be exhausting to read. Waters depicts the interrelationships through many characters through time flawlessly and I found the structure of the book (going backward in time) to be very well done. Waters is one of those authors who writes her characters so realistically I re-read passages just to revel in their accuracy.

I’ve been on a Blitz kick lately and I would recommend Black Out and All Clear by Connie Willis to people who are looking for more WWII novels with a wide but related cast of characters and not necessarily chronological story line.
