For a book that was short-listed for The Man Booker and The Orange Prize, I was expecting a bit more.  I enjoyed how all the characters in the story were weaved together through various connections and I applaud Waters for tackling the story from another angle. Her descriptions are detailed allowing the reader to create a vivid mental image of not only the characters but the setting and the events as well. However, the story is structured to move backwards in time and while this provides further interest as relationships and events gather more depth, it does leave some issues unresolved.  An aspect that I found irritating.

Got to page 240 and just wasnt enjoying it- too many stories going on and too many characters to keep on top of

Read this for the first time more than a decade ago and it's a book that has always stuck with me. Just as good the second time around.

this was very raunchy and lurid. i was confused for like the first 100 pages but i got it !! there was lots of really good world building and for once i understand a non linear narrative gasp

I have to remind myself I do not like historical fiction, and I do not like fiction about wars. This book was both-- but it was still an okay book. I had read Fingersmith many years prior, and then Tipping the Velvet so this was not my first Waters book; I definitely enjoyed the others more. I fell in love with Kay and ended the book still in love with her, my favourite parts featured her, in all time periods.

Im sure it's a delight for many others, but it just didn't do much for me
