The Night Watch

I wanted to like this book more than I did (moving backwards through WWII has the potential for being an awesome plot/narrative background), but the writing was a little dry, and at the end, I realized that I had learned absolutely nothing about any of the characters. I was left with kind of a "What was the point?" feeling about it.

Just not my thing. Didn't enjoy the characters, the setting was frustrating and just too tedious.

Ah pitkästä aikaa hyvä, mukanaan vievä ja paksu romaani, jonka sain luettua nopeahkosti alusta loppuun. Olisin voinut kevyesti lukea tätä vielä 200 sivua lisää. Harmitti, kun hyvä tarina loppui.

Vaikka sotajutut eivät juuri koskaan kiinnosta, niin Waters kirjoittaa siitäkin kiinnostavalla otteella. Oikeastihan keskiössä on ihmissuhteet - seksuaalivähemmistöön kuuluvien ihmissuhteet sodan keskellä.

I was engrossed in the book, although it, admittedly, took me a couple of months to finish it. I loved it from the beginning all the way until the very end. It was anticlimatic, and I think it should have been replaced with the scene before it. Nonetheless, it was a great and moving book. I wouldn't suggest it for anyone who craves action in books, as this novel has lack of it; I, however, don't mind!

Loved this book, I would re-read this one so much. I loved the reverse timeline, and the characters.

Ultimately disliked the device used of jumping around to witness the characters three separate years. There was an unevenness to the time Waters spends on particular stories and moments. Some wonderful and powerful moments, glimpses at how war and secrecy alike can tear at a person, but here, unlike in other Waters' works that I've loved, the structure takes away from the overall impact. I usually love Waters' ability to create an entire world in my head through her dense language, but in Night Watch there are bits that are a bit of a slog, and the time jumps confuse and lessen the impact rather than heighten it.

68/50 easily my favorite Sarah Waters and I have have been completely absorbed and enamored with every word she's written. I'll have to read this one again because the narrative is basically backwards. so compelling, so absorbing. the characters are people you know. the war feels like a character. I just love it.

Another decent novel from Waters if somewhat forgettable.
