sarah waters has this really peculiar ability to tell stories beautifully, but the stories she tells are almost always very mediocre. i enjoyed the reading of the story, but not the whole of the story.

Liked the gayness but it was way too long to have no plot.
I don't know whether to give it less star or a bit more. LGBT is not really my thing, and betrayal too, so maybe it's a bit subjective.
The Night Watch is a book set in 1941-1947 where England was in war with Germany (Nazi). It doesn't focus on the war (we can see how damage it makes but nothing more), but more into how the characters live their life at war and after the war. All the young man were sent to the front line, while the women do the works, even jobs usually did by men.
The plot is a reverse chronological one, where we can see how they settled their lives 2-3 years after the war ended, and back to where the war started and what made them the current them. This kind of plot is an extreme one and not many people like it (my book club buddies don't at least) because there's no enclosure to it. I used to watch movies with a hanging end, but this is too much. Tho there are some chances, in which we can imagine the future of each characters.

3 stars. I don’t have much to say about this one but it was definitely my least favorite by Waters thus far. The writing was gorgeous and lush as always but the plot meandered and did not hold my attention. I was bored for majority of it. Also none of the characters were memorable and I didn’t like any of them. Unfortunate but I feel like this is one that would probably fare better upon a re-read.
