A very enjoyable read with a fair number of strong, generally complex female characters. While the male characters are a bit lacking in comparison (cliché villains or idealized lovers), and the end is telegraphed a bit too early on, it's a book that has a lot of fun, provides a nice variety of characters with different life experiences, representing a range of gender and sexuality.
What a witch is, can be, should be, and might be are all lovingly brought into conversation throughout the whole of this book.

The sisterhood - adored each sister in their own way, they were so vivid and passionate, each their own person. The magic came alive off the page and loved the differences based on culture/upbringing. Also found it interesting the story tied into real life issues like womens suffrage and racism & classism Character arcs and the villains were so well done. The sacrifices were heartbreaking and bittersweet. The love and hope and fierceness of it all!!!!
I love Alix E Harrow's writing style and loved this book immensely. Truly one of my fave reads this year.

I absolutely loved the concept and setting of this book. It was in “new” Salem, after their witch trials and around the woman’s suffrage movement. The intertwining of witching and woman’s rights with politics was so good!! There were so many great quotes too.
Unfortunately the story didn’t resonate with me throughout, I got bored or it seemed to drag (over 500 pages).

“Once upon a time there were three witches.”
Well I’m glad to have finally gotten to read this book, I really enjoyed it! Overall, I think it had a great message of women’s empowerment, set against a historical witchy Salem backdrop.

I loved the three sisters (and their names), how different they were and the way they came together to recover their lost magic. The use of children’s rhymes and fairytale stories were a great plot device, it gave the book a magical realism quality that I found very interesting and clever.
The pacing was on the slower side but it didn’t bother me too much, the full picture of the story coming together was worth it. I’m comparing this book to the Discovery of Witches novels by Deborah Harkness, maybe with less fantasy, but definitely similar vibe! I’m feeling great about my official first witchy read of the season✨
