It's not every day I find a book like this. Some moments along the way are well-worn tropes in stories where witchcraft and magic are real, but between them are sparks of originality and an author who is focused on talking about witchcraft as the political act it has been throughout history. You'll find yourself in a world where witches are aligned not just with the interests of women, but all justice causes. You watch white witches learn how limited their worldview has been regarding what types of cultural magic exists and what's worth recording. The protagonist witches are in alignment with freedom of people of the global majority and dismantling racism, as well as working women, LGBTQIA+ rights, and union organizers. Magic is used as both something mundane (take stains out of a shirt) and truly extraordinary (familiars summoned from beyond). The ending is satisfying without being a storybook happy one, and there's lots of fun prose.
I liked this but I hope the author discovers alternative ways to describe literally everything other than the world “wild” because I was damn near to dnfing this at one point solely because of it

You know those period books that make you feel like it might be fun to live in those times (despite the fact that those times were basically only pleasant for the wealthy upper class)? This definitely is not that.
This book takes place in the era of the women’s suffrage movement, and is not afraid to show you the powerlessness, hopelessness, and despair that most women felt in these times. However it is also an inspiring and empowering tale, with women supporting one another, learning, healing, finding love and joy in bleak times. All wrapped up in a sweet witchy bow.
It maybe started out a tad slower but quickly I was hooked and needed to know what happened to the Sisters next. I felt so many emotions throughout this - from tears of joy, sobbing, and stressing for these characters. And the story itself had me more interested in the women’s suffrage movement & looking for more info. Definitely worth reading. 💜
