A brief history of WW I from the perspective of Howard Gillies, one of the surgeons who pioneered the development of plastic surgery as a medical specialty.
A very unique, and well researched perspective with an emphasis on the horrible facial wounds many soldiers had as a result of The Great War.

This was a very engaging history about an aspect of WW1 that I'd never thought of: plastic surgery. It's very well written, uplifting, and heart breaking. Definitely worth the read. The bit about trans use of plastic surgery is at the end, as is the negative reaction to the person who had their procedure done. This book is by no means transphobic or ableist, but it portrays the attitudes that patients might run into: both those who were horribly disfigured by war and those who elected to have procedures for other reasons. Fascinating, worth the read
