The machinations in full view at the end of this book are horrifying. The imagery is really enjoyable but it’s almost too bleak. also, to unfortunately compare it to the film, you need someone like Richard Burton to sell Liz falling in love. I can’t really believe it with just Leamas on the page

The story centered around the spies' powers of deception, which made it a good, fast read.

The spy who came in from the cold is regarded presumably the best espionage novel ever written. It is no bond or bourne, in fact it is about an aging counter intelligence agent who is looking to retire and leave his clandestine life behind. There are no adrenaline rushing car chases, nor does the protagonist single handedly defeats the entire organisation, killing everyone in the process. George smiley is mentioned from time to time, who is the main protagonist in many of le carre's novel. Most importantly it creates doubt in your mind and you question the expedient nature of espionage and its agents.

I really enjoyed this one, my favourite of the three so far and I can see why it gets the acclaim that it does.

Bittersweet at the end, but what a journey throughout. One that I am sure I will re-visit at some point.

I would rate this at 4.5/5, rounded down. Depending on the rest of John Le Carre books I have to read, I may or may not bump it up to a 5.
