Was hoping this would be more fulfilling, but the concept is just too similar to me as Thinner by Richard Bachman (Stephen King)… I mean, I know its different overall, but I was looking for more originality. I guess it’s my fault for never reading the description before reading a book

I've been a Stephen King fan my whole life, but this book was just... bland. Bland, inoffensive stock characters. Bland, inoffensive storyline. I've read more compelling stories in an introductory creative writing course. Never before have I finished a book and had such a sense of "meh." I rated it two stars instead of one because there wasn't even anything to actively hate about it.

Despite my lower than usual rating, I actually really enjoyed this little guy! The reason for my -2 stars was really just that I went into it with a lot higher expectations than I should have. I’m not really sure what I was expecting? It’s a really straight-forward book.

Let me start by saying I’ve never read Stephen King until now. I love the stories I’ve seen of his in film and television but the size of his novels intimidate me! I saw this book at the store and had to take a double take. This tiny book was written by Stephen King?! I can totally read this! Also: I saw that this won best horror book for 2018 on here and this has nothing to do with horror.

Very cute story and pretty bizarre, but what do you expect; it’s King, something has to be different. It’s a feel good story about embracing challenges and cherishing what time we have. There are themes of tolerance and acceptance and I think they were well written. Living in Kansas I’ve seen first hand some of the small-minded town folk you’ll come into in the story. The ending was very beautiful, almost tear worthy.

Again, it’s a short story and worth the read!
