5 Exceptional stars!
I devoured this book in one sitting. I really felt for Bird. Don’t we all feel insignificant and invisible at times? I loved how Cash and Fitch noticed the change in their home was because of Bird. They realized how important she was to their family and found an appreciation for her.

I had just turned 10 years old when The Challenger was scheduled to launch in January 1986. I remember how all the classrooms had TV carts rolled into them so we could watch it live. My eyes were glued to the screen, not wanting to miss a single moment. I was barely even aware of the other 4th graders around me. And then it exploded, making everything just go...still. I don't remember the rest of that day. It's a blur.
So it was a unique experience to be back in those shoes while reading this middle grade novel about three very different siblings in the weeks, days, hours leading up to the Challenger launch.
It's a beautiful exploration of siblinghood, as well as a thoughtful way to bring today's kids back to what it was like back then. It felt authentic and gentle, and I highly recommend it.

as someone who gets time off of class to watch launches and still gets uber excited over them, this book hit home and made me reconnect with little me, who was the only girl morbidly obsessed with space in my school. but bird's story only reinforces my life's goal to bolster the presence of women (especially women of color) in STEM
