fun, brief, family-friendly horror stories from some of my favorite authors. good quick-read.

Just as the title suggests, each story can be read in 30 seconds or less. This is a collection of super short scary stories that range from the silly, such as Vladimir Radunksy's A Disturbing Limerick to the truely terrifying like Lemony Snicket's Something You Ought To Know. Some of my favorite children's, young adult and adult fiction authors have bite size frights in this collection. Some of my favorites are Libba Bray, Joyce Carol Oats and Margaret Atwood. There are also a handful of stories in graphic format as well. I would use this in a school age program about scary stories. Know your audience before you start reading aloud.

LOVE! Some of these are truly creepy! The best out of the bunch is definitely Klassen's picture. Dark, funny and amazing.

Me ne sono pentita?

Fantastico.

What a fun, spooky read! Perfect for October.

Great collection of scary short stories-almost vignettes. 1-3 pages, and they all leave you amazed at how they can be so short and yet so creepy.

Kids will love it.

One- to two-page horror stories, some told with graphics, most without, by many of the top writers in the business today. Many hits, a few not-hits (no real misses). Quite an excellent choice for anyone looking to be scared (or find new tales to tell around the campfire). One favorite:

The Legend of Alexandra and Rose

Nope, nope, nope, nope. I picked this up because I'm a sucker for short stories (in this case flash fiction, which is fascinating when done right), because of the dazzling array of authors, and because (I'm only a little ashamed to admit this) about all I can handle in the way of horror is that meant for younger readers. I am also intrigued by the recent popularity of "two-sentence scary stories," which can also be too much for me, but which, even I have to admit, are kind of genius.

But right from the get-go these stories were horrible and disturbing, more so than the relatively tame and somewhat silly cover art predicted. If 33-year-old me can't handle this, I know for a fact 10-year-old me would have begged my parents to take it back to the library immediately so that it didn't darken my house any longer than necessary. The stories in this collection are much better suited to the YA crowd because of their gruesomeness and intensity.
