Joint review on both books as I read them back to back. Spoilers. A mix of what I liked and didn't like:
The Fantasy
Introduce a gnole, you have successfully drawn me in! The scene where the Goddess speaks to Caliban was particularly captivating. However, I was left wanting more from the steam link aspect; its abstract nature, attributed to ancient technology that no-one truly understands felt like a missed opportunity.
The Romance
Brenner's individual chemistry with Slate and Caliban surpassed any spark between the main couple. A pet peeve of mine: if a writer has to explicitly state there's sexual tension, there usually isn't!
The Characters
Edmund is bae. What character growth!
Slate, despite her potential, comes across as a bland narrator and becomes quite annoying by the final quarter of the second book.
Also, why do all Paladins in this universe share the same personality? And Caliban, seriously? Wondering about Slate's sexual preferences just because she doesn't seem attracted to you when you're fresh out of prison and on a suicide mission.....how could he notice the demon? This is the second time he's missed one, he needs to be put through demon spotting paladin training again.
Brenner is bae, too. *Insert 'look at how they butchered you my boy' meme*. He deserved better.
The Ending
Ultimately, it was underwhelming and anticlimactic
