Nice conclusion to the story, though the romance bit dragged on significantly past the climactic battle at the end so the pacing felt a little "off." I'm glad the author has kept returning to this world since writing this - it's really a delight.

I read this back when it came out. Was fine then, still fine. Just needed something easy to read.

Though I'm convinced that she used "capitol" 20 times when she should have used "capital" (used 1 time.) But I'm a pedantic nit-picker.

From: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/capitol
"The key is this: capitol, the one with an "o," is very limited in use. It appears in the term Capitol Hill, and is used to refer to one very particular and famous building, to some other similar buildings, and, occasionally, to a group of buildings that includes those similar buildings. For all other meanings, the word you want is capital."

I did not expect to CRY at one of T. Kingfisher's fantasy romance books, but here we are. I maintain that this and Clockwork Boys should be one book, but I definitely prefer this one to the first. I suppose one likes a middle and an end more than just a beginning and a middle?

The way T. Kingfisher has designed this world is just so fascinating. It's not so big as to be unwieldy, but there's just enough lore in each installment to give me something to think about. After reading Paladin's Faith which also had a lot to do with demons, they are definitely one of the scariest parts of this universe, but I also am obsessed with the Dreaming God and the paladins who fight for them.

I can't say the romance in this feels that different from the Saint of Steel series - after all, they're all about paladins with huge chips on their shoulders - but I ate it up nevertheless. Caliban and Slate are such a pair, and I felt like someone had stuck their hand in my chest and started squeezing my heart by the end.

I hope Kingfisher returns to this universe (White Rat main character when???), as I will read everything she writes in it. Top notch.
