I liked it! I appreciated the continued shifting perspectives across the chapters, this time between Adam and Vic. This book did quite a bit more world building and I loved that. It felt a little Dresden-ish while maintaining its own voice and not getting too absurd. More than happy to pay for book 3.

So many elements of this supernatural story make points that are very relevant to the world we all live in. Having grown up in farm country in the Great Plains, I felt connected to the reference to The Dust Bowl. One dire event impacted families for generations. Adam is getting closer to figuring out what has been influencing his family for generations.

Interspersed between explosions, magic fights, and mystery solving, there are heartfelt moments between family members and loved ones and introspective moments about what it means to be human and alive.

Once again, the pacing of the story was so well constructed that the narration was a pleasure to listen to, and the narrator's performance was an excellent addition to the story.

What a twist so much of this story was not predictable to me. This world the author has created is enthralling and I just want to learn more about it

*I received an eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

This follow up to White Trash Warlock was everything that I could have hoped for and more! Adam is back in his hometown of Guthrie, Oklahoma, and on the hunt for answers about the fate of his Aunt Sue. This novel digs deep into the Binder family history, introducing new characters and old secrets. It also visits places steeped in memories, both good and bad, for Adam, like his aunt's trailer and the home where he grew up. Adam's past is riddled with trauma and betrayal and I liked that in this book we get more communication and reconciliation between Adam, Bobby, and their mom. Vic also gets a chance to see the place that Adam hails from, though his journey there, at the side of Argent, elf and Queen of Swords, is plagued by misadventure. While Adam is dealing with problems close to home, Vic is learning more about the magical world he's now a part of and his role as a Reaper. I enjoyed getting more in depth with Vic's character and I also liked seeing more of his family. He and Adam are total opposites and this book definitely gets into those differences.

This book has it all: family drama, plot twists, dark magic, action, revelations, and two men trying to find their way to each other through a mess of lies, differing views, and inherent differences. I loved book two of the Adam Binder series and I'm anxious to know what happens next!

This delightfully dark (in a goth way, not a grimdark way) urban fantasy has a reluctant hero with a heart of gold and a sweet ride.

Adam's sweet ride- a 1977 Cutlass

And everything from glamorous elves who drive fancy vintage cars to a meth lab in a trailer in rural Oklahoma to a comfy family dinner of mac and cheese with hot dogs and sweet tea.

The personification of death makes an appearance in this one as well (yes, the lady who made black roses bloom in Vic's mom's yard, and yes they're still going).

This book is mostly set in Oklahoma, we get to meet more of the Binder family (Jodi and Noreen, so charming! and Tommy) while Vic spends time with the elves. Rattlesnakes, a meth lab, an Insane Clown Posse ripoff band, and a lot of family secrets are waiting for Adam in good ole Guthrie, Oklahoma. The elves have some of their own weird stuff going on-- succession in the royal family, elves who want to destroy the human world. I am definitely invested in Vic and Adam's relationship, they were apart for most of this book yet their relationship changed. Both characters are having a lot of realizations about themselves and their relationships with their families as well. It's interesting that Vic is fairly certain about who he is as a person but is only just coming to fully embrace his bisexual identity, and seeking approval from his family, whereas Adam is wholly uncertain of his place in the world and with his family but is 100% comfortable in his identity as a gay man.

Oklahoma homestead

SpoilerWe leave off with Vic showing up just as Adam needs to run after his brother, who has been kidnapped by Jodi and her boyfriend the meth chef and roadie for the cheap ICP ripoff band. Vic and Adam SMOOCH while crossing paths to jump into the car on a wild ride and WAHH I need fanart of this moment, it's too much. Adam and Vic manage to destroy The Druid and then Vic says "I am the end" and disappears?? Then Silver refuses to give Adam the power that Adam thinks he needs to go after Vic. Just notes to myself for when the next book comes out!

Really enjoying this series-- Depending on how it goes with the romance I would definitely recommend it to fans of [a:Ilona Andrews|21748|Ilona Andrews|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1588103544p2/21748.jpg](urban fantasy with romance) and [a:C.L.
