What a great collection of poetry by a black, queer writer. my favorites are "To every fa*got who pulverized me for being a fa*got, " A victim dissolves into tears", portrait with stiff upper lip" and "pushing up onto its elbows, the fable lifts itself into fact". All of the poems are good but those 4 really spoke to me. It was raw, honest, intense, sad, truthful and so much more all at once. I really enjoyed it and will be checking out more of his work.

I was very surprised by this. The Malevolent Volume really hit for me, and this was at times difficult for me to grasp. There is quality writing and important issues touched on, but so often I found myself zoning out. I tried reading it in smaller doses, but that just left me feeling like I could not remember what I read last. I’m hoping maybe a reread at a later date will improve this?

I usually love it when authors read me their work, especially when it's poetry, but not this time around.

Wow. Nearly gave up a couple of times (these are heady at times), but so glad I stuck through. Will be rereading and studying these.

I read a lot of poetry audiobooks and this was, by far, one of the best I've ever heard. This collection has such a musicality that becomes apparent when you hear the author read the poems aloud. Also, there was some play with sound effects (layering?) that was never cheesy or overwhelming but instead gave new depth to the poems it was used on. This audiobook was a joy to listen to and I look forward to Reed's next collection.
