bit of a choppy start (the way this is structured is slightly weird at first) but quite enjoyable

This was a fun audiobook with all the different narrators. A lot different than any other contemporary historical fiction I’ve read!
I don't entirely know how she does it, but Silvia Moreno Garcia knows how to draw you in. The descriptions of the dance scene encapulsates the entire novel - you can't help but look.
I love old Hollywood and discussing the gendered aspects of it all. It's a proper little system where women really have no control... until they do.
Maybe I would have liked the novel to not be focused on a female rivalry (kind of). I don't think it's quite problematic but something about it didn't quite sit right.
Vera was a phenomenal main character. Garcia just has a way of writing where a character who should be stereotypical (a fresh, slightly naive woman), but somehow leapt off the page. Maybe it was her cancelled engagement, her love of music or her demand to be loved fully.
