Elizabeth O'Roark, I get what it means when they say “men written by women”. Your men are amazing, and Josh is not an exception.
This was such a summer-y vacation-y book and I'm here for it. What a mood booster! From the setting, to the scenes, to the humour.
I was counting on the banter and the author did NOT disappoint. Drew managed to constantly give Josh a an aneurysm and I'm here for it. I love how his blood pressure sky rockets when he's around her and yet he can't help but keep getting drawn to her like a moth to a flame. The hate-to-love here was done so well with such hilarious barbs.
I loved how Josh cared sooo much about her from the get go and remembered those tiny tiny details about her. Every single time he was concerned over her, had me swooning.
And I'm happy that our girl Drew gets the happy ending she so well-deserved.
I adored Josh's mom. She was such a sweetheart and she most definitely deserved way more than what her husband and her second son (Six) gave her. I'm glad that Josh and Drew were there for her.
Every single time I think of Six, my blood pressure raises. That dude was absolutely good for nothing. I get why Drew stuck to him, but also at the same time I don't get why ANYONE would stick to him.
Drew's step-family were a steaming pile of shit and her mom should've done so much better that what she did for Drew.
Overall this was a light-hearted and yet a heart-warming read. Entertaining without a doubt.
“It’s really a wonder no one’s beaten you to death,”
Excellent. Sloane has decided to be as judgmental as possible, and Drew has decided to bait her. Just what this shitshow of a trip needs.
Sunlight strikes the table in a blinding flash of heat and several birds swoop in, attempting to steal food from the plates. My father ignores it all, back on his phone, and my mother, for once, can’t summon the energy to shoo them away. Sloane, on the other hand, jumps up from the table as if the three small birds are something out of a Hitchcock movie and pulls antibacterial gel from her pocket.
And Drew is laughing at the whole thing, licking chocolate from her perfect lips.
Your face only has two expressions—mildly disgusted and really disgusted.
I just made the world’s most distasteful joke and he doubled down on it. I respect that.
You put up with Hayes being British, I put up with Six smuggling weed in a guitar case.
You deserve someone who worships the ground you walk on, Drew. Someone you can lean on. Who cares more about your happiness than his own.
It takes so little to make her happy and I wonder if anyone in her life even tries.
“Who’s ready for some mud?” Kai asks and there are hoots and hollers from the rest of the group. I don’t holler. I’m from the city. We don’t really celebrate mud there so much.
Does he truly believe that all this time I was duped by Six? That I was too dumb to see what he was?
Does he truly believe that all this time I was duped by Six? That I was too dumb to see what he was?
She’s a tiny little fighter, resilient and perfect just as she is.
The truth is I expected little and I got even less.
“Happy to see me this morning?” I ask instead.
“Don’t get too flattered,” he says moodily. “I just need to pee.”
Six, chatting amiably with our driver, starts to take the front seat.
“For the thousandth time,” Josh says between his teeth, “she gets carsick.”
This is what it’s like, I think, when someone actually cares about you. They remember you get carsick. They worry about your inhaler
“You want to hear something unsettling?” I ask, desperate to lighten the mood. “Your parents are the only ones on this trip who had sex.”
“That,” he replies “was so unnecessary.”
“Why didn’t you tell me you broke up with Joel?” he asks.
“Would it have mattered?”
He pushes his hands into my hair, gripping my face in a way that shocks me, leaves me breathless. “That cannot be a serious question.”
It’s seductive, having someone on your side for once.
I hoped for too much and made more of this than it was, and I should have known better.
And then I hang up, block his number, and get into the shower where I cry like a child for a very long time.
“Pull the trigger. On all of it. Also, do you know how I can get a plane?”

Fun, easy read! Ex’s brother, forced proximity, incredible banter
Ugh, I don't know about this one. There is a lot to like about it. I do like Elizabeth O'Roark's writing style, I liked that the characters felt real and not like archetypes, and thought the issues the characters dealt with were mature and interesting. On the other hand, this book was WAY too long and drawn out. I thought I was almost done at one point... and I was at 49%. I also really felt pained by the conflict that happens between the couple near the end. She does something foolish, but his reaction was so painful and I felt like the way it was all resolved was kind of a cop-out and just wasn't satisfying for me. I don't know, it just ended on a sour note for me and loses all of the momentum it built.

The burn on this is so good! I loved this way more than the previous book. I thought the ending was a little weak tbh. I wish it represented Somalia better.
