I'm a little torn on this. I absolutely loved both leads, and I thought their journey from resentment to friendship to romance was really well done. I enjoyed all of their scenes together, and I really bought in to their love story. If this were just a review of the actual romance and the FMC and MMC, it would be a 4 or 5.
However, a few things in this book made me uncomfortable, and I can't, in good conscience, give it a stellar rating/review because of these things. Firstly, there were jokes at the expense of starving/suffering people in Somalia. Josh is a doctor who works at a clinic in Somalia, for context. Regardless, it was weird that this well-off family is vacationing in Hawaii joking about Somalia multiple times. There were also a few instances where Josh's mother was vocally critical of the supposed lack of quality medical care available in Hawaii, which she read about in a travel guide??? It didn't make any sense or have any bearing on the story, and I don't know why it was included.
Secondly, there were some unfortunate jokes regarding the leads in the first book, Deal With the Devil. While on the phone with Drew, Tali (FMC from book one) jokes that her husband wants her to have a C-section birth so that her vagina isn't ruined by giving birth. I found this distasteful, but Tali waves it off like "oh, my silly husband and his demands". This seemed a little out of character for both Tali and Hayes, and I didn't like it.
