Ghodsee does a wonderful job of balancing despair towards our current capitalist system and hope towards a political and government structure that cares more about its citizens. And not only that, but she constantly balances the difficult conversation of what socialist practices benefit women and society while acknowledging the many pitfalls of what socialism looked like in practice in many Eastern European countries.

Post 2017 and pre 2024 me that had this on my tbr from the first time I saw this book in Germany in around 2019 would have found this hopeful and fascinating. Post 2025 me found this fascinating and depressing.

Best book I've read so far
informative medium-paced

Ghodsee's  study of post-communist Eastern Europe reveals that economic independence directly impacts women's intimate lives. When childcare, healthcare, and financial security aren't tied to relationships, women choose partners for pleasure rather than survival. Not too dense to read and quite a compelling case that good governance might be the ultimate aphrodisiac.

Fun, simple premise, easy listen for nonfiction

I was expecting a bit…..more but it’s not bad
