This was the perfect time for me to pick up this book. Published after the 2016 election, it felt more relevant than ever in 2025.

Ghodsee painted a vivid and nuanced picture of how socialism impacted women’s lives for better and for worse, and how capitalism often falls within the latter. Capitalism hurts everyone but women especially. Though most of the book was pretty dry, the last chapter was beautifully hopeful and empowering. No empire can last forever, and the world can be better because everyone deserves better!

Though I listened to this on audiobook, the information was very dense at times and I think I’d like to buy a physical copy to review in the future.

I really enjoyed this short and informative book!  It was nice to read a perspective about what the Eastern Bloc, Soviet Union, etc. got right in terms of economic parity between men and women, even if these efforts were not completely successful.  I also appreciated both the warning and hopeful tone of the author's writing that feels extremely relevant to today.
