Surprise Star Trek reference! Interesting to learn that there was some good about 20th century socialism, since all messaging has been very negative.

Professor Ghodsee is a very skilled and knowledgeable communicator, her other scholarly work fills out the story presented here as an introduction and polemic. For the reader looking for an introduction to former state socialist countries and life under those regimes, this is a good primer. The gendered view is such an interesting way to highlight the differences between capitalist and non-capitalist societies. However, I was really looking for more here-- for the already-committed socialist (or even social democrat), nothing was really new to me. If you want a few new talking points for your agitation, this is a good start, but for those looking for more details, you can mine Ghodsee's well-sourced list of further readings (for which I'm grateful).

Neat argument for how economic systems affect women disproportionately in relation to men, and why gender equality is important to all of society, not just women.

I think this is an incredibly informative read for anyone frustrated with our current economic climate or interested in feminism.

At the end of the day, there’s nothing very surprising in here, nor did I find it had that much to say. Good writing, lively without being twee or quirky, but it meandered and felt like the work of a columnist stretched to become a short book.
